For so long, entrepreneurs have gambled on the question of whether success is based on natural talent or pure hard work. These set of people particularly need answers because their success and failure can make a world of difference to the welfare of society.

For one thing, you do not possess a natural gift for a certain job, because targeted natural gifts don’t exist.  You are not a born CEO or investor. You will achieve greatness only through an enormous amount of hard work over many years and not just any hard work, but work of a particular type that’s demanding and painful.

Nelson Mandela was not born a president, likewise Aliko Dangote did not start doing business from birth. They both grew up learning the art. Some people are visionaries but are also great business men, so where does natural talent come in? Under close scrutiny, prodigies were well trained. I think success has to do with aptitude for what you are really doing.

Vusi thembekwayo for instance is a good public speaker but is not popular because he is talented; he actually spent years of studying and practice. Take musicians for instance, you can be very talented and gifted in music but if you don’t practice, if you do not study, you will never make it.

The good news is that your lack of a natural gift is irrelevant – talent has little or nothing to do with greatness. You can make yourself into any number of things, and you can even make yourself great. Greatness isn’t handed to anyone; it requires a lot of hard work.

The first major conclusion is that nobody is great without work. It’s nice to believe that if you find the field where you’re naturally gifted, you’ll be great from day one, but it doesn’t happen. There’s no evidence of high-level performance without experience or practice.

The best people in any field are those who devote the most hours to what the researchers call “deliberate practice.”

Its activity that’s explicitly intended to improve performance that reaches for objectives just beyond one’s level of competence provides feedback on results and involves high levels of repetition.

On the other hand, there are still some reasons why we should think natural talent gives successful results more than hard work.

There’s an increasing amount of evidence that the role of hard work is less important than natural talent when it comes to attracting support for new business ventures.

Just because a particular business idea or formula works for one person, that does not mean it will work for you. Unless you understand what your talents are, and create a business that best serves those talents, you’re going to be trying to fit the proverbial square peg into a round hole. Which as we all know is impossible.

The secret to business success right is discovering and activating your natural talents for business success and wealth. It is also the reason you fail. You are not working with your talents, but against them. It is a constant battle, and you are exhausted even before you get started.

Natural talent allows you to design a business, and a system, that makes wealth flow to you, instead of making you chase after it. That is what true success is. Being in a business that you love, and using your natural talents in the way they were intended to be used.

Understanding your unique talent profile can also help you to find the best people to work and partner with.

Knowing what your talents are, and how to best utilize them and combining them with your passions, is the first step in business success.

But then, who has ever succeeded in business because he or she is naturally talented in business? How does one excel in something without practicing it? These are the questions that run through the minds of many. Some doubt if business can be practiced but yes business can be practiced. Many elements of business, in fact, are directly practicable.

Presenting, negotiating, delivering evaluations, and deciphering financial statements – you can practice them all. Chairing a board meeting requires understanding the company’s strategy in the deepest way, forming a coherent view of coming market changes and setting a tone for the discussion.

Anything that  anyone does at work, from the most basic task to the most exalted, is an improbable skill.

Business is about creativity. Sometimes people think things just happen overnight, but that is not usually the case, even if you are well known and well established. Success is always a matter of patience, and patience can be established if you do not have it.

For most people, work is hard enough without pushing even harder. If great performance were easy, it wouldn’t be rare.

People hate abandoning the notion that they would coast to fame and riches if they found their talent but the liberating news is that greatness isn’t reserved for a preordained few. It is available to you and to everyone.

In summation, is business talent a natural talent? I think it’s a combination of aptitude, work and luck.
